On Saturday, May 20, 45 runners and walkers took off from the start line of the Whitaker Wander 5k to support White Mountain Community Health Center’s programs making healthcare accessible to all in the Mount Washington Valley.
Katie McCarthy came in first place, finishing the 5k course in 20:46. The other top female runners were Carli Krebs, 24:35 and Amal Gawari, 24:58. Scott Brane was the first male to cross the finish line in 20:52, followed by Carson Lau, 23:26, and Christopher Lalmond, 23:51.
The health center hosted the Whitaker Wander 5k for the first time in 2019. The event has been on hold through the pandemic, and staff and board members were excited to be able to bring it back this year. Board member and race co-director Caitlin Behr said, “We hosted a wonderful event on Saturday and it was amazing to see all of this hard work come to fruition.”
Race co-director and health center Director of Operations Julie Hill said, “I couldn't be more pleased with how the event turned out. It really was a celebration in so many ways, and I think the smiles on everyone's faces said it all. We can't wait to do it again.”
In the age 65-69 division, the top female runner was Margie Riforgiato, 29:52, and the top male runner was Michael Mendonna, 27:27. For runners age 70-74, the top female runner was Cindy Perkins, 36:26, and the top male runner was Ken Rokes, 29:40. The top runner in the 75+ division was Drew Coyle, who ran the race in 41:29.
The top walkers were Rich Leonard, 45:44; Alana Wilson, 46:53; and Rachel Johns, 47:38.
Nine children completed the 1-mile Kids’ Fun Run: Gabriella Dennis, Milo Kackley-Lalmond, Abrie Kaplan-Thompson, Cecilia Maiorano, Lucia Maiorano, Maelle Maiorano, Anabelle Roche, Alina Roche, and Avaeh White.
In addition to the 5k and Fun Run, the event included hula hooping with family nurse practitioner Josie Lamb, APRN, raffle prizes, a used sneaker recycling drop-off from Green Mountain Conservation Group, and a handwashing education station with the health center’s community health worker.
The health center raised almost $8000 towards its programs through the Whitaker Wander 5k, through the race registrations, donations, and sponsors. White Mountain Community Health Center fosters community-wide health through quality and compassionate services. The organization makes sure that everyone in Mount Washington Valley can access their services through our sliding fee scale and other programs that remove barriers to care.
The health center provides primary care, pediatric care, dental care, substance use disorder treatment, dietician services, sexual & reproductive health service, and behavioral health care.
